Abstract. Despite thefact that by now alcoholism as a negative social phenomenon has been
widely studied by scientists ofvarious elds, theproblem continues to be one ofthe most urgent
andintractable. is negative social phenomenon causes enormous damage to society, adverse-
ly a ects people’s health, reduces life expectancy, reduces working capacity, thereby worsening
thequality ofhuman resources andlimiting socio-economic development. e relevance ofthis
study is determined by thefact that thesocio-psychological analysis ofthe problem remains ex-
tremely insu cient at this time. Usually, themain place inits study belongs to clinical andpsy-
chological research. At thesame time, thesocio-psychological aspect is clearly visible inthe prob-
lem under consideration. It is connected with the study ofthe Self-concept andinterpersonal
communication as signi cant resources forovercoming life di culties. At thesame time, coping
andthemechanisms ofpsychological protection ofa person dependent on psychoactive substanc-
es, their speci cs andinterrelation, as well as thephenomenon ofthe Self-concept itself, have also
not been fully studied andrequire more careful consideration. In this regard, thearticle attempts
to generalize andanalyze theoretical andmethodological approaches to thede nition ofthe con-
cept ofthe Self-concept ofa healthy person, thefeatures ofthe Self-concept andthecauses ofits
distortion ina person with addiction, as well as to consider coping behavior models used by
people with alcohol dependence, which can provide theoretical grounds forcreating e ective pro-
grams to prevent alcohol addiction, as well as to help form an active problem-solving behavior
that allows people to cope with a pathological attraction to alcohol.
