Abstract. e rapid development of articial intelligence technologies has had aprofound
impact on contemporary artistic practice, leading to substantial transformations in the structure
of cultural production and aecting the foundations of artistic value, mechanisms of legitimation,
and traditional notions of creativity. is process has generated acrisis of classical art-historical
categories and revealed the need to develop new theoretical approaches for analyzing artworks
created with generative neural networks.
e present study is devoted to the epistemological analysis of the role of articial intelli-
gence in shaping anew artistic reality, understood as aproduct of interaction between human
intention and computational algorithms. e methodological framework integrates philosoph-
ical concepts of epistemology and sociology of culture with art-historical methods, including
formal- stylistic and comparative analysis of works created through generative neural models
— Portrait of Edmond de Belamy (Obvious, 2018), Machine Hallucinations (R. Anadol, 2019–
2021), Spatial Opera eater (D. Allen, 2020), e Next Rembrandt (B. Korsten et al., 2016),
and Memories of PassersbyI (M. Klingemann, 2018). ese projects represent key directions
in AI-based art — from generative portraiture and machine visualization to immersive spatial
installations and algorithmic reconstructions of historical artistic styles.
e research identies shis in the main epistemological models of art and reveals the spec-
icity of algorithmic aesthetics, based on statistical analysis and probabilistic reconstruction of
visual patterns. e result is the introduction of the concept of algorithmic epistemology as atool
for understanding cognitive processes in digital art. e study highlights and analyzes the funda-
mental dierences between art oriented toward gurative representation and AI-driven practices
focused on data processing and pattern generation.
It is argued that there is atransition from classical authorial subjectivity to distributed agen-
cy, in which the artistic statement emerges through the interaction of multiple cognitive and
technological actors. As amethodological outcome, the paper proposes athree- level analytical
framework comprising: (1) interface interaction (prompt engineering); (2) latent data structures,
shaped by the characteristics of training datasets; and (3) cultural reception, reecting institution-
al and sociocultural contexts of perception.
e scientic novelty of the research lies in the systematization of the epistemological features
of AI-assisted art and the development of methodological approaches for its analysis and cura-
torial interpretation. e practical signicance of the study is expressed in the possibility of for-
mulating new criteria for art-historical evaluation of digital art and supporting innovative artistic
practices under conditions of digital transformation.
