Herbarium of JSC “International Scientific and Production Holding «Phytochemistry»”

Abstract

The herbarium of the MNPH “Phytochemistry” is the oldest in Kazakhstan. Its creation is connected with the development of the mineral resource base of the USSR in Central Kazakhstan and the appearance on the map of the USSR in February 1934 of a new city - Karaganda. In 1941, a botanical garden was organized in Karaganda. Botanists of the botanical garden were actively involved in the study of the flora of Central Kazakhstan. The first florist who laid the foundations of the herbarium of the botanical garden was P. I. Kalyakina, a graduate of Tomsk State University. The herbarium contains numerous collections of P. Kalyakina from the eastern part of the Kazakh upland (Karkaraly Mountains, Sarykuldzha), made in the summer of 1941. Forced migrants made a great contribution to the formation of the herbarium: G. M. Potapov described an endemic species of Berberis karkaralensis; from G. V. Grigoriev’s collections made in the mountains of Ku, Kent, Karkaraly and in the south-west of the Karaganda Region, V. N. Vasiliev described new species of birch trees: Betula caryaceifolia, B. karagandiensis. In the last quarter of the XX century, A. N. Kupriyanov and V. G. Mikhailov made a great contribution to the development of the herbarium. Currently, the herbarium (KG) has 21995 sheets containing 2892 species, 732 genera and 128 families.
