Abstract

The scientific significance of this study consists in the study of morphological features of vegetative and generative organs of the perennial monocarpic relict species Cardiocrinum cordatum var. glehnii, listed in the Red Data Books of the Russian Federation and Sakhalin Oblast. The atypical process of dying off of the entire aboveground part (leaves) after flowering in summer is also described for non-empheroid representatives of the family Liliaceae, which in turn confirms the uniqueness of this species. The study of this plant species is relevant due to the fact that Cardiocrinum cordatum var. glehnii is a unique, inimitable species, as it appeared in the Paleogene period of the Cenozoic era (typical Cenophyte), having preserved its original appearance until nowadays. Also based on new materials and analysis of literature data, the article considers the geographical distribution of Cardiocrinum cordatum var. glehnii on the territory of the Sakhalin Oblast, namely on the southern part of Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands of the Big Ridge, as well as beyond its boundaries. Consequently, the information given in this article will help to form new knowledge about the main features in organ morphology and distribution of the species Cardiocrinum cordatum var. glehnii.
