Genus Astragalus L. in the flora of Southwestern Kopetdag (Turkmenistan)

Abstract
The genus Astragalus L. currently contains 3494 taxa, including 294 New World species and 63 Old World subspecies (Frodin, 2004). In the flora of the southwestern Kopetdag (hereinafter SWK) it is the largest group of higher vascular plants and includes 46 taxa (43 species and 3 subspecies). Representatives of this group are valuable forage pasture plants, and some species are consumed by the local population. Among astragalus there are many ornamental and medicinal plants. At the same time, this is a group that requires further study, as evidenced by the recent discovery and description of a new species on the territory of the SWK. Currently, most populations of this genus are influenced by anthropogenic and abiotic factors leading to species decline. This article offers an assessment of taxonomic diversity in the light of modern ideas, an analysis of life forms, the current state of the genus in the region, threats to its habitats. According to the results of chorological analysis, the astragals of the SWK belong to 22 types of habitats, representing the Ancient Mediterranean subkingdom. There are 12 endemic species in the region (26.1% of all species of this genus).
