Contribution of the Altai region to the genetic diversity of Paeonia anomala L. (Paeoniaceae Raf.)

Abstract
Variability of plastid ycf1 gene was studied to elucidate genetic diversity of Paeonia anomala (Paeoniaceae), which possesses the most extensive range among all species of the genus. Throughout its distribution range, the species shows a wide phenotypic variation, both in reproductive and vegetative traits, with the description of subspecies or varieties. Thirty-six populations were sampled across the entire distribution range of the species. Three haplotypes of the ycf1 gene have been revealed, two of which can be considered as apomorphic. All haplotypes are distributed in distinct geographical locations, while the greatest genetic diversity of Paeonia anomala is manifested in the Altai region. It is important to note that when developing new territories and promoting the species in the northern and western directions, those haplotypes that are considered apomorphic were involved.
