I. V. Vereshchagina as the founder of the South Siberian Botanical Garden

Abstract

Irina Viktorovna Vereshchagina turns 100 years old in April 2024. This is a famous florist who has been working at the Siberian Institute of Horticulture for many years. Thanks to the active actions of Irina Viktorovna, the foundations were laid for the creation of the South Siberian Botanical Garden. I. V. Vereshchagina spent a lot of effort and energy. collecting collection material for the taxonomy. She selected a botanical garden project similar to the taxonomy of the botanical garden in Copenhagin. She collected significant material to form a collection in the form of living plants and seeds. For many years, Vereshchagina collaborated on a voluntary basis with the Regional Environmental Center and went on expeditions together with the center’s staff and students. While working at Altai University, Irina Viktorovna prepared for publication and published in 1982 a large work by her father V. I. Vereshchagin, “Identifier of plants of Barnaul vicinity” which for a long time was the main manual for biologist students during field practice. With great enthusiasm, she shared her knowledge with students and graduate students. At various times, Irina Viktorovna taught at the Altai Agricultural Institute, Altai State University, and at the school of gardeners. She taught the course “Decorative Floriculture,” which always attracted the attention of students. She was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor, three state medals, and two silver medals of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition.
