Abstract

Reading is the most important fundamental skill that a person can acquire. However, learning English, especially reading skills, seems to be a big problem for students, because for most of them, reading texts that include national and regional components in English seems difficult and lacks motivation. The purpose of this study was to study the development of reading comprehension in English using concept maps, as well as to study the attitudes of students towards learning reading comprehension in English using concept maps. The researcher demonstrates several examples from interviews that surveyed third-year students of the Faculty of World Languages and Cultures, the Osh State University, Kyrgyzstan. In addition, this article provides an overview of the main lines of thought that have led to interest in concept mapping as an educational tool to promote reading skills, critical thinking, comprehension and retention of new language words, ideas and facts in English learners
