Abstract

This article discusses the process of ethnic identity as a correlation to a certain ethnic community, as well as the formation of ideas about their group, "the image of us". Ideas about their ethnic group formed through auto-stereotypes, which correspond to heterostereotype (the idea of "the other"). The article also presents a study aimed at identifying the features of ethnic identity of Russians. It uses the method of semantic differential of Ch. Osgood to compare the subjective perceptions of Russians about Russians, Armenians and Ukrainians on the example of the Volgograd region, as well as to identify the most pronounced features possessed by representatives of Russian, Armenian and Ukrainian nationality in the subjective representation of respondents. The influence of multinational population on the formation of the modern Russian ethnic group is shown.
