MENTAL DISORDERS AS AN ELEMENT OF SOCIAL ISSUES IN MASS MEDIA

Abstract
The article examines the specifics of the representation of social problems in modern Russian mass media using the example of the topic of mental disorders. The role of participatory journalism in the construction of media images of social problems that program patterns of audience perception and stimulate positive behavioral reactions is highlighted. A structural and functional analysis of the coverage of mental disorders in the Russian media space is carried out, highlighting such functions and dysfunctions of social journalism as problematization, deproblematization, stigmatization, romanticization and fakeization. The conclusion is drawn about the significant role of video bloggers in creating distorted and reduced images of mental illnesses. This is due to the fact that bloggers are too dependent on the desires and tastes of the audience, and therefore are forced to consider only popular aspects of mental disorders, ignoring complex and dramatic stories. A number of public pages on social networks have also been identified that romanticize eating disorders and create false images of the external attractiveness of teenage girls.
