THE IMPACT OF MIGRATION ON THE GROWTH OF INTER-ETHNIC TENSIONS IN RUSSIAN REGIONS (THE CASE OF THE ORYOL REGION)

Abstract

The article deals with the specifics of the impact of migration on the growth of inter-ethnic tension in different regions of Russia (on the example of the Oryol region). The author pays attention to the study of the peculiarities of migration on the territory of the region. In the article the results of the study of problems of overcoming tension and conflicts of interethnic interaction are presented, the study was conducted within the framework of the work of the laboratory of migration and interethnic conflicts of the Educational and Research Center of Conflict Resolution, functioning at the social faculty of the Oryol State University. The author stresses that the local community in Oryol is a key actor in these conflicts. The author emphasises that the local population is not familiar with the cultural specificities and traditions of migrants, and does not seek to get to know them, while the perception as «alien» is so strong that it does not allow for harmonious inter-ethnic relations to be fully built. The development of intercultural communication skills and the formation of tolerance are mentioned as the main measures that can be used to prevent migration conflicts.
