YALOMAN HILLFORT (FOR TRESS) IN CENTRAL ALTAI: EXPERIENCE OF MODERN MAPPING
Abstract
The well-known archaeological complex, designated “Yaloman Hillfort”, is an important site of cultural heritage in the Altai Mountains. The article gives brief information about the attempts to study it. In 2001, the first documentation of fortification and other structures was made with the help of tacheometric survey. The description and plan were reflected in the report, which became the basis for registration of the mentioned object. Some of the results of this work are only briefly mentioned in publications. The cultural affiliation and final dating of the site have not been determined yet. With the emergence of new opportunities the necessity of modern mapping of the Yaloman hillfort, which can be considered as a fortress, has become apparent. The obtained materials are reflected in the text and illustrations. These data allow us to expand our knowledge of the site and outline a further research programme, as well as measures for its protection and use.
