NEW MATERIALS ON ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE TOBOLSK KREMLIN
Abstract
The article presents the results of rescue archaeological excavations which took place in 2006 in the south-eastern part of the Tobolsk Kremlin. The central object of research was the well-preserved foundation of the building dating back to the 40s of the 18th century – 30s of the 19yj century with the traces of reerecting. Despite the fact that the building was marked on a number of drawings and engravings of the beginning of the 19th century, its history is not traced in the local lore literature. With the involvement of a number of cartographic sources, it was found out that the capital building had a complex history of construction, was part of the bishop’s complex, and had an official purpose. The research was done of a number of objects related to the initial period of the city functioning –the end of the 16th – 17th centuries. Despite the fact that the cultural layer of the 18th – 19th centuries at the research site was almost completely destroyed, the earlier layer was preserved. This circumstance allowed collecting and studying a representative collection of objects relating both to the “pre-Russian” and to the early period existence of Tobolsk.
