MIDDLE PALEOLITHIC INDUSTRIES OF THE ALTAI MOUNTAINS: NEW STAGE OF THE STRASHNAYA CAVE STUDY
Abstract
The discovery of the remains of an unusually early Homo sapiens in the West Siberian region gives relevance to the issue of the differentiation of the different cultural expressions of the ancient population in the Altai Mountains. The Strashnaya Caves materials can play a significant role in the research of the problem. As an archaeological object the cave has become known since 1966. On the monument allocation is made of lithological layers with a total capacity of 10 m. Layers 1 and 2 are allocated to the period of the Holocene, underlying layers - to the Pleistocene. In the Pleistocene layers allocation is made of 19 archaeological horizons. These radiocarbon dates indicate thelate Pleistocene age of the Paleolithic cultural layers. Compared to the stone industries of the Altai Mountains, the materials of these layers look archaic. They are characterized by a clear focus on flake basis; they also contain well expressed Levallois elements and minimum of microtechnology. Of particular note is the anthropological material discovered in the lithological layer 3.1. It is defined as belonging to the representatives of Homo sapiens, but at the moment to associate it with a specific ensemble material layer is rather problematic. The solution to this problem is one of the objectives of the new cycle of the site research.
