ROCK ART OF THE TURAN MOUNTAIN AT THE MIDDLE YENISEY
Abstract
The Turan Mountain on the right bank of the Yenisei River is associated with one of the archaeological micro regions of the Minusinsk Basin, which are so rich in the sites of different types and periods. The flooding of a coastal part of its territory by the Krasnoyarsk reservoir and lack of publications on the sites investigated led to an underestimation of the importance of this area for the archaeology of South Siberia. The paper is devoted to one of the archaeological site types – rock art. It is written to introduce the history of the study of Turan petroglyphs and to present them as a complex of rock art sites, which deserves to take its place among the other major complexes of the Minusinsk Basin. Known since A.V. Andrianov’s work in 1904, “Turanskaya Pisanitsa” (Russian for “Turan rock art”) on the coastal cliffs had been lost, but as it turned out, it was not the only concentration of images, tamgas and runic inscriptions on the rocks of Turan. Summing up the data of investigations from different periods, including her own field research, the author introduces some hitherto unpublished archival documents and new materials into scientific circulation, presents the map of rock art locations and gives a general characteristic to the main cultural and chronological groups of the Turan rock art imagery. The publication of these data testifies the high research potential of this yet little-studied area and is intended to stimulate interest to its further investigations.
