CHARACTERISTICS OF METALLURGICAL PRODUCTION OF ELUNIN CULTURE (based on the study of slag pottery from the settlement of Pavlivka-I)
Abstract
This article deals with fragments of pottery found at the Pavlivka-I Uglovsky settlement area in the Altai Territory. The specifics of this collection are that broken earthenware pottery has been discovered where ornamentation is fixed on one side, while on the other side slag has become attached. This provides a unique possibility to determine cultural identity and date the identified residues of the metallurgical complex. To establish the chemical composition of the slag these findings were studied in the laboratory of the department of archeology, ethnography and museology of Altai State University using an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer ALPHA SERIES™ (Alpha model 2000). For this, a mining analysis program with a high limit of detection elements was used. The ornamentation on pottery with attached slag, from the settlement Pavlivka-I, allows association of these artifacts with the Elunin archaeological culture and the early Bronze Age date (end 3rd to 1st quarter of the second millennium BC).Based on the recorded material, the conclusion is that, the Elunin masters used ordinary pottery as crucibles for smelting. The results obtained allow us to continue to study the production of bronze, traces of which were found in two basic settlements: Berezovaya Luka and Kolyvan-I.
