FIRST RESULTS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH INTO THE “LEBEDI-III” HILLFORT
Abstract
The “Lebedi-III” hillfort is located on a high cape on the right bank of the river Inya, in the vicinity of the village of Lebedi (Promyshlennovsky district, Kemerovo region). A deep ditch and rampart divided it into two parts. The less fortified northern part of the site was plowed. Based on the results of archaeological research, 70 objects were identified on the territory of the hillfort. Most of them are located in rows along the edges of the headland and moat. Preliminarily, the site is dated to the Middle Ages.
In order to obtain additional information about the structure of the hillfort “Lebedi-III”, a magnetic survey was carried out in its northern part. As a result, it become possible to identify a complex of buildings of the same type, the walls of which were made of burnt material. Above two of them there are small hills that appear to be the remains of collapsed above-ground structures. Thanks to the analysis of the peculiarities of the location of negative anomalies, a system of paths was recorded in the space between the buildings. Along the moat there is presumably a zone of very dense development, possibly a number of buildings with common walls. It was possible to discover a number of new objects that do not have relief features. This is, first of all, a complex of interconnected buildings that can be associated with the defensive system of the hillfort, and an oval-shaped structure that could have been intended for housing livestock. Most of the buildings were identified with a high degree of confidence, which is confirmed by the results of comparing different types of data processing (vertical gradient, anomalous field). Since the structure of the hillfort “Lebedi-III” has a close resemblance to the Voznesensky hillfort (“Ton-Tura”), which is considered the headquarters of the governor of Khan Kuchum in Baraba, it can tentatively be classified as a pre-Russian town, which was primarily an administrative and military base points during the existence of the Siberian khanates. In the future, it is planned to obtain its full magnetic map and, through spot excavations, to evaluate the features of its organization and functioning.
