ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS ON THE TERRITORY OF THE ALEXANDROVSKY GARDEN IN TOBOLSK IN 2023: PRELIMINARY RESULTS
Abstract
The publication presents the preliminary results of the archaeological survey of a wide area of the Alexander Garden in the lower historical part of Tobolsk in 2023. On the area of 448.6 sq. m studied cultural layer and architectural objects belonging to the end of the 17th–20th cc. 17th–20th centuries. The upper cultural horizon is represented by the Soviet period, from the 1920s to the present day, and the lower — the end of the 17th — 1 quarter of the 19th century 17th — 1 quarter of 20th cc. The upper horizon reveals traces of the garden and park layout that existed in the 1920s–1960s, architectural objects related to the functioning of the garden in the 20th century. In the lower horizon the remains of the city quarter were excavated, which, according to all signs, mainly functioned before the Great Fire of 1788. After this event, until the 1880s, Blagoveshchenskaya Square was located on the site of the residential quarter, and then Alexander Garden was laid out. When studying the lower cultural horizon, which refers to the end of the 17th — 1 quarter of the 19th c. The study of the lower cultural horizon, which dates back to the end of the 17th — 1 quarter of the 19th centuries, revealed the layout of the neighbourhood with the division of estates, the remains of numerous buildings, the presence of pavements, etc. The research revealed a lot of finds that characterise the everyday life of the city inhabitants.
