Urban engagement in the city development and life satisfaction of Omsk students with different types of local patriotism
Main Article Content
Abstract
The relevance of studying Omsk youth's attitudes towards and behaviors within the urban environment is driven by the consistent migratory decline observed in the region over the past decade. Socio-psychological determinants of this situation include a decrease in satisfaction with the quality of the urban environment, population support measures, and opportunities for self-realization within the city. Furthermore, only select groups of Omsk youth demonstrate attempts to become involved in the city's development, indicating an emerging attachment to it. Therefore, the study aims to identify types of Omsk students based on their level of local patriotism and to compare their assessments of life satisfaction and willingness to engage in the development of Omsk. The study employed testing and questionnaire methods, using the following instruments: the "City Attachment Questionnaire" by Yu.V. Potapova, A.Yu. Malenova, and A.A. Malenov; the "Constructive Patriotism Questionnaire" by S.V. Vasilyeva and A.V. Miklyaeva, modified by Yu.V. Potapova and A.Yu. Malenova; the "Citizens' Responsibility Questionnaire" by T.P. Emelyanova, T.V. Drobysheva, E.N. Vikentieva, and S.V. Tarasov; the "Satisfaction with Life Scale" by E. Diener, adapted by S.P. Elshansky; and a custom questionnaire. The sample included students from Omsk universities (N=204). The findings indicate that Omsk students demonstrate moderate attachment to the city and constructive local patriotism. Four types of students were identified, differing in their approaches to participating in the development of the urban environment and in their life satisfaction. Two of these (designated as "emotional activists" and "rational activists") are more satisfied, engaged, and willing to participate in the city's development, clearly articulating their motives. The other two (labeled as "dissatisfied critics" and "detached egocentrics") are practically excluded from city life, demonstrating a decline in local patriotism, Omsk attachment, citizen responsibility, and life satisfaction, but nothing specific events and activities that could potentially interest them. Attracting youth to the city's development, taking into account these typological characteristics, should differ strategically: it is advisable to involve the "emotional activists" in social initiatives and events, the "rational activists" in improvement projects, and to stimulate the "dissatisfied critics" and "detached egocentrics" by demonstrating real actions taken by the authorities aimed at improving citizens' personal comfort and opportunities for personal growth.
