Abstract

The contents of popular public accounts representing different directions of Russian culture in the Chinese messenger WeChat as a way of representing the Alien/Other sociocultural life are analyzed within the framework of the cognitive approach. An analysis of studies focusing on social networks has shown their ambiguous effect on popular culture and has brought to the fore the problem as cultural security vs social networks. The feasibility of studying the pragmatic effectiveness of Russian culture on the Chinese audience of the WeChat social network was determined. The relevant public accounts were selected for studying during the research project “Russian culture on a Chinese messenger WeChat”, implemented by students of the Russian language department of the Institute of Foreign Languages of Sichuan University in 2023–2024. These accounts were grouped in six following areas: information and news public accounts about Russia, Russian cinema culture, Russian artists and fine arts, Russian musicology and music, travel in Russia, Russian gastronomic culture. The purpose of the study is to systematize public accounts based on the identified characteristics of WeChat content, representing different areas of Russian culture. The peculiarity of the material and the object of study determined the use of the sampling method in empirical research, referring to the descriptive method, including techniques of observation, comparison, generalization, and classification of the analyzed material, as well as its external and internal interpretation. The theoretical basis of the study is a cognitive approach to analyzing the contents of the most popular public accounts in the Chinese messenger WeChat. Therefore, a wide range of views of different directions in Russian culture was identified as a way of representing the Alien/Other sociocultural life. The result of the first content analysis of the texts on WeChat public accounts selected for the research has become their typology and multi-aspect characteristics. The sociocultural status of the Alien/Other transferring through public accounts, the contents of which represent various vectors of Russian culture in the open communication environment of WeChat for a billion Chinese audience, determines the value of this study. The model for representing nominations of public accounts in the Russian version as a result of equivalent translation, in the original Chinese traditional writing, and in Pinyin graphics with an indication of an ID address can be used as a base model in other linguistic cultures.
