THE SECOND FIND OF THE EARLY IRON STIRRUP IN THE ALEI STEPPE (north-western foothills of Altai)
Abstract
The items of horse equipment, found during archaeological research, are not only important cultural and chronological indicators, but they also contribute to the reconstruction of certain spheres of the lifesupport system of specific nomadic societies. Their study allows us to obtain the necessary information to solve the issues related to the study of the ethno-cultural interaction processes. The appearance and distribution of stirrups was of great importance in the history of the peoples in Eurasia. It was these devices that contributed to the modernization of equestrian riders and influenced military affairs during the early Middle Ages. The article presents in detail a new find of a rare type of iron stirrups that were widely spread in Asia and used during the Turkic conquests. The product was discovered in a pit during archaeological surveys in the village of Staroaleisk in the Tretyakovsky District of the Altai Territory. This is the second find of this type, which comes from the Alei steppe in the zone of the northwestern foothills of the Altai. Both stirrups under study are kept in the Altai Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography of Altai State University. The article presents datings and some of their analogies.
