ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN THE TERRITORY OF THE KHLEBNAYA SQUARE OF SAMARA IN 2013–2014 AND 2017
Abstract
The root terrace at the confluence of the Volga and Samara rivers is the most interesting in terms of studying the early history of the city of Samara. At this place in 1586, Prince Zasekin laid a Russian fortress for the defense of the South-Eastern borders of the Moscow state, and after it was destroyed by fire, in 1704–1706 in some distance, a new fortress “Earthen Castle” was built. However, until 2013 no archaeological work was carried out in the territory of the historical part of Samara. The article discusses the results of archaeological excavations in the historical part of the city of Samara conducted in 2013–2014 with the involvement of some of the available materials of the 2017 work. The wooden structures revealed as a result of excavations are correlated by the authors with the remains of the fortifications of the second fortress of Samara.
