THE NEW FINDS OF ORNAMENTAL SHAFT-HOLE AXES OF BRONZE AGE FROM KYRGYZSTAN
Abstract
Recently there were found new occasional finds of shaft-hole axes in Kyrgyzstan, related to Bronze Age. The most interesting among them are three shaft-hole axes with ornamentation on socket. The both of these axes were found occasionally in area of Karakol-town in Issyk-Kul lake region and the third axe is occasional find from Chuy valley. The axes have massive form and typical lines of such type of Bronze Age tools. But the general detail of these shaft-hole axes is casted relief decoration. Each axe has its own type of ornamentation on first axe the ornament is shaped like fir-tree branch, on the second axe's socket decoration shaped like six parallel lines and the socket of third axe is decorated by crossed lines, looked like net. If first type of ornamentation has wide circle of analogies in Tien Shan region, Semirechie, Xingjian and Altay, the second one has not any known analogies in nearest regions. The third type of ornament has parallels only in Tien Shan region (Chuy valley). All decorated shaft-hole axes are related to Andronovo cultural antiquities. But in the same time chronology of decorated shaft-hole axes is not developed well. All decorated shaft-hole axes have characteristic features of the advanced type such tools, so they should be dated within 1200-1000 BC.
