SEWING KITS IN THE OKUNEVO BURIAL COMPLEXES
Abstract
Sewing kits in the Okunevо burial complexes consisted of needle holders, needles, leather straps, woolen threads, as well as functionally related pendants made of animal teeth, beads and beads. At all stages of the existence of the Okunevo culture, needle holders and needles accompanied burials of all age groups, regardless of the sex of the buried. In general, needle holders with needles were a characteristic attribute of women’s burials. Metal needles equipped with two needles reflected the ritual norm of the Chernovskij stage. Similar kits in children’s burials are associated with the demonstration of prescribed status for girls. The equipment, material and dimensions of the needle holders certified the individual status of the owners. In everyday life, sewing kits were equipped with a leather strap, on which the tubular needle moved freely, opening access to the needles. The teeth of the animals at the end of the strap fixed the position of the needle holder and symbolized the individual status of the owner.
