TECHNIQUE OF PRIMARY STONE KNAPPING ON THE PALEOLYTIC LOCATIONS IN THE NORTHERN ARAL REGION (Western Kazakhstan)
Abstract
The locations of Aral AD, Aral-1–2, 4–6, 8, were discovered during exploration work in the territory of the northern coast of the Aral Sea in Western Kazakhstan in 1998–1999 by a joint Russian-Kazakhstan expedition. Due to the extremely limited timeframe of the research, a detailed study of these points was not possible, the collection of archaeological material was carried out selectively; in preference were the most expressive products. In the collection of stone artifacts of the locations of the Northern Aral region related to the primary splitting, monofrontal, bifrontal and radial cores predominate. Also there are single two-platform monofrontal cores, cores with flaking perpendicular to the axis of one plane, end and prismatic cores. Excessive amount of raw materials available at these sites, allowed selecting the blank pieces suitable in the form and requiring minimal adjustments. In general, the technology of primary splitting in the locations of the Northern Aral Sea region is characterized as non-blade, non-Levalloi, aimed at obtaining flakes. The presence of orthogonal and discoid ones, and the manifestation of early techniques of face and prismatic splitting should be noted.
