The Russian language and its role in intercultural communication

Abstract

The article examines the role of the Russian language in intercultural communication. On the basis of an interdisciplinary methodology, various functions of the Russian language and the language of interethnic communication are analyzed as a language through which foreign languages are translated into the languages of the peoples of Russia, as a language replacing national languages in those areas in which they are not used for a number of objective and subjective reasons. The article shows the specifics of the development of unwritten national languages and the reasons for the use of the Russian language in the speech and literary activities of many ethnic groups. The mixed composition of the population in most subjects of the Russian Federation accelerates the use of the Russian language in all spheres of public life and everyday life of many ethnic groups, which is often regarded by researchers as a threat to the development of the national languages of the peoples of Russia. However, these processes do not lead to individuals abandoning their ethnic identity and do not deprive them of the opportunity to express it in speech activity in Russian.
