Proper Names in the Prose of Hunting by A.K. Tolstoy

Abstract

The article discloses the results of the analysis of proper names at the angle of the specifics of their referential meaning (representation of classes and subclasses), semantic features and stylistic functions. Research material – essays on hunting by A.K. Tolstoy "Two days in the Kyrgyz steppe" and "Wolf fosterling". When studying proper names, the following methods were used: historical and literary, sampling, classification, contextual and semantic-stylistic analyzes, descriptive. The result was that the typology of poetonyms in essays is not diverse, among the onomastic classes topopoetonyms prevail in volume; there are much fewer anthro-, zoo- and chronopoetonyms. The semantics of names is formed by contexts, its specificity determined by the onyms in essays being real; however, due to function in fiction, their meaning is transformed in accordance with the author's conception. Poetonyms in essays enable  modeling of the chronotope and the development of action. Names perform such stylistic functions as aesthetic, text-forming, nominative-pictorial, cultural-historical, local-temporal, characteristic and appellative.
