“And suddenly a leap, and suddenly she flies”: on the Question of Means of Enhancing Action Dynamics in the Works of A.S. Pushkin.

Abstract

The article examines the functioning of the verbs лететь (to fly, to be flying) and летать (to fly habitually) and their prefixed derivatives within the system of means for enhancing the dynamics of action in the plot-driven poetic works of A.S. Pushkin. The material for the study was a corpus of examples, including cases of the use of the verbs "flyet'" (to fly) and "let'" (to fly), as well as their prefix derivatives in Pushkin's works. The aim of the study is to identify and systematize the techniques of intensifying action dynamics in Pushkin’s text in relation to the position of the dictative and modal subject. The conducted analysis confirms the significance of motion verbs as a structuring element of Pushkin’s poetic world and demonstrates that the dynamic stylistic dominants established by V.V. Vinogradov for Pushkin’s narrative prose are also relevant for his plot poetry: his poems, fairy tales, and the novel in verse Eugene Onegin. Besides the mentioned aspects of analysis, the novelty of the study lies in revealing the differences in the functioning of the verbs лететь and летать and their prefixed derivatives in dynamic contexts with different types of action subjects.
