TURKIC ENCLOSURES OF THE YAKONUR COMPLEX IN NORTHWESTERN ALTAI (Based on M.P. Gryaznov’s Excavations)
Abstract
The article presents materials from excavations of Turkic enclosures of the Yakonur burial and memorial complex, carried out by M.P. Gryaznov in 1939. This site is located near the village of the same name, in the Ust-Kan region of the Altai Republic. Despite the importance of the research results of the designated objects, which became the basis for identifying one of the most common groups of Turkic enclosures, the excavation materials remained unpublished. Based on available archival data (drawings and photographs, as well as brief text information), a detailed description of the studied memorial structures is given. The authors establishes that objects 7a–b are quadrangular adjacent enclosures with steles or high balbals installed at the northeastern wall. Analysis of the identified structures, taking into account the existing experience in interpreting of early medieval sites in Altai and adjacent territories, made it possible to determine the period of construction of the published complex within the second half of the 6th — first half of the 8th centuries AD with a possible expansion of the upper chronological boundary.Downloads
