Abstract

The construction of group identity is examined on the example of analyzing interviews about the activities of the group “World Club of Petersburgers” in the optics of actor-network theory (NT). Language shapes group identity through the individual utterances, actions and practices of actors. The group is seen as an actor with a unique network of relationships. The study connects linguistics and NT's criteria for constructing groups, showing how language creates and reproduces identities in the connections between actors. The concepts of actor, actor-network, and agency are examined. We develop a mental map of actors (linguistic markers) reflecting group identity construction. We demonstrate the stages of construction of such identity, which is an assembly with redefinition of boundaries. We indicate the consequences of the verbalization of the group's values and the mapping of the group's boundaries in relation to the role of agitators and the attraction of resources. We prove that the result of the assembly is not the stability of the group, but rather a new mobilization of  professionals.
