Where the Volga flows into the Caspian Sea: review of the XXIII International Scientific Conference "Onomastics of the Volga Region"

Abstract

The article describes the range of onomastic research identified at the XXIII International Scientific Conference "Onomastics of the Volga Region", which was held on October 1-3, 2025 at the Astrakhan State University named after V.N. Tatishchev under the auspices of the Russian Society of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature. At the plenary and breakout sessions, reports were heard and discussed on the theoretical and methodical aspects of onomastics, as well as on the topical issues of its most intensively developing sections: anthroponymy, toponymy, urbanonymy and ergonymy, literary onomastics. For the first time, as part of the work of this specialized conference, a section was formed where the speakers discussed the specifics of the functioning of proper names in art, science and the media. In general, during the conference, the priority areas of modern onomastics were updated, controversial issues and research prospects were identified.
