Keywords: WitchTok, TikTok, magical discourse, media linguistics, multimodality, sociolinguistics

Abstract

The article concerns the linguistic study of WitchTok, a digital community of esoteric and neo-pagan movement representatives on TikTok. The transformation of discourse of magic at its integration into a short video format is analyzed. The purpose is to systematize knowledge about structural, semiotic, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic characteristics of this communication, and to determine ways to reinterpret rituals in digital environment. The empirical basis of the study consists of authentic video materials, verbal texts, and communicative practices functioning in the Russian and English segments of WitchTok. Methodology includes interpretative analysis of polycode texts, pragmatic analysis of speech acts, and sociolinguistic description of vocabulary. WitchTok is characterized as a multimodal discourse where meanings are formed through the interaction of verbal, visual, and auditory codes. Language functions are identified, ranging from performative magical acts to social consolidation. Sociolinguistic aspects are described, including jargon and Anglicisms reflecting the global context. It is shown that discourse strategies aim at legitimizing the magical worldview within the process of re-enchantment.
