GROUPS AT RISK FOR ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION AMONG RUSSIANS OVER 60 YEARS OLD (RESULTS OF SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH)
Main Article Content
Abstract
The global trend of population aging actualizes the problems of preserving the health of the older generation. With age, the risk of developing anxiety and depressive symptoms increases significantly, which are often underestimated and not treated. They can lead to deterioration of physical health, dementia, disability, and death, including as a result of suicide, as well as lower quality of life, increased family burden, and increased government spending. This study presents selected results of the federal statistical sample observation of the health status of the population conducted in 2023. The aim of the work is to identify the categories of older generation representatives most vulnerable to the appearance of subjective anxiety and depression through comparative analysis and calculation of relative risk. The information base contains data from a survey of 36,585 respondents over the age of 60, of which the target group is 19,551 respondents experiencing severe or moderate anxiety and depression. 4 groups of risk factors were analyzed: socio-demographic, socio-economic, biomedical and behavioral. Results: every second Russian over the age of 60 experiences increased anxiety or depression. The risk group included: women over 70 years old, single and widowed, with a low level of education, having communication difficulties, with “poor” and “very poor” health, cancer, heart diseases, osteoporosis and disability; poor people living in a communal apartment or separated from family members; leading a sedentary lifestyle. The most psychoemotionally protected are men, residents of the Republics of Chechnya, Mordovia, and Yakutia, who live in an official marriage and with minor family members, eat well, and are physically and socially active. The results obtained can be applied to scientific justification and support of management decisions aimed at strengthening the physical and psychological well-being of the older generation, improving their quality of life and reducing the socio-economic burden of anxiety and depression.
