METALLURGICAL MANUFACTURE OF THE VITH – VIITH CENTURIES AD ON THE TETUSHI II HILLFORT IN TATARSTAN
Abstract
The article deals with issues related to the metallurgical production of tribes of the Imenkovskaya archaeological culture (IVth – VIIth centuries AD). Despite the fact that for the last fifty years, the forges for smelting metal and other artifacts associated with this type of craft among the people of the Imenkovo culture have been studied, but there was not enough evidence on their dating and the context of functioning. Excavations at Tetushi II hillfort of ancient settlement in Tatarstan allowed filling this gap. The production site has been studied on which there were metall urgical furnaces of the ground type. The bases of the forges and the lower part of the walls are preserved. Melting pits near this site have also been studied. One of them was made in an abandoned household pit. The second one provided a specially dug pit for smelting ore. All these objects date to the VIth – VIIth centuries AD. Judging by the stratigraphy of the excavation, the a playground with horns was made first. It functioned for a long time. Here there were two forges, one of which was dismantled after smelting, and the second was put in its place, the remnants of which were recorded during excavations. After the forges, the smelting was done in the pits. They were small in size and did not have complex structures. Such objects were first interpreted on the sites of the Imenkovskaya culture.
