DESIGN OF SEYMA-TURBINO BRONZE PRODUCTS OF THE MIDDLE IRTYSH REGION
Abstract
Various combinations of the two main technical and stylistic techniques — corrugation and openwork were used to decorate the Seima-Turbinsky bronze products. A variety of textural and constructive solutions corresponded to the leading design principle — variability. Without reducing the functional characteristics of the form, the craftsman could selectively use its structural elements. A stable system of parameters can be terminologically defined as a dimensional standard that the craftsman followed. The formation of design solutions can presumably be associated with the territory of the Middle Irtysh. Having originated in the conditions of mass production, the design of bronze castings served the purposes of group identification, but at the same time, materially embodied the symbols of a special social status within the group. The appearance and wide distribution of new types of items (spearheads with a narrow nib, daggers with a spear-shaped blade profile) suggests a functional conditionality of the development of the Seima-Turbino design.
