M.P. GRYAZNOV’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF “DEER” STONES
Abstract
“Deer” stones are one of the most important archaeological sources, invariably attracting the attention of researchers. The study of “deer” stones has a long and complicated history. Some aspects of their origin, purpose and chronological definition still remain controversial. Mikhail Petrovich Gryaznov, who from the very beginning of his professional career was characterized by the versatility of scientific interests, also conducted research in this area. The article is devoted to the analysis of the works of M.P. Gryaznov, in which he touched upon the issues of chronology, cultural-historical and art history interpretation of “deer” stones. Despite the insignificant number of these publications by M.P. Gryaznov, their significance, especially for their time, can hardly be overestimated. Their importance is due to the fact that they allowed us to rethink the issues of dating such complex objects as “deer” stones, found without connection with any groups of objects or complexes.
