Abstract

The Timiryazevo Burial Ground-1 is located on the left side of the Tom River in the territory of Tomsk. According to the research results in 2009 includes more than 800 objects. More than 80 burial mounds were excavated in different years (including burial memorial objects, ground burial). The date of the burial ground is the 5th — early 10th century, is attributed to the Upper Ob culture. The article analyzes the materials of L.M. Pletneva’s excavations in 1971 and 1973. The purpose of this article is to identify the burial mounds of 5th–6th centuries. At the past time this work has already been carried out, however, in connection with the extensive publications of sources on the adjacent territories, the authors considered it necessary to return to this important period — the beginning of the early Middle Ages. As a result of the analysis of all materials from the Timiryazevo Burial Ground-1, a cultural and chronological complex of objects of the 5th-6th centuries was identified. It includes tools (coulter, scabbard, twisted chains), weapons and armor (arrowheads, belt, armor plates, quiver hooks), horse decoration (bridles), clothing accessories, jewelry and cult objects (earrings, manes, medallions, ring, buckles, bell-shaped and zoomorphic pendants). The mutual occurrence of these items in the Timiryazevo Burial Ground-1 barrows allowed us to reliably determine the date of 13 burial mounds and, with a high degree of probability, to attribute 7 burial mounds to this group.

The specific features of the burial mounds of the 5th–6th centuries is the finding of many items in the objects of the mound, made in reduced or miniature form. Finding objects of the Tashtyk style, objects of polychrome style, which are typical for the post-hunnic period and objects of Early Turkic culture indicates that Tomsk Priobye was not only included in the sphere of influence of these cultures. Probably, in that time there was repeated infiltration of small groups of the Tashtyk and Early Turkic population.
