MONASTERY AT THE ESTUARY OF THE KIRGHIZKA, ARCHIMANDRITEʹS SMALL SETTLEMENT, BURIAL GROUND NEAR TOMSK: RESULTS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH AT THE ESTUARY OF THE BOLSHAYA KIRGHIZKA RIVER IN 2023 (ZATO SEVERSK, TOMSK OBLAST)
Abstract
This article presents the results of archaeological research conducted in 2023 on the right bank of the estuary section of the Bolshaya Kirgizka River (closed administrative-territorial entity of Seversk, the Tomsk Oblast). This place has been known in archaeology since the late 19th century, but archaeological research had not been conducted there. The obtained materials confirmed the existence of a settlement complex within the cape dating from the 15th to 17th centuries. Furthermore, a cultural layer associated with the period of Russian settlement in the Tomsk environs was examined. In the first half of the 17th century, the Assumption (Aleksievsky) Monastery was founded at the mouth of the Bolshaya Kirgizka River. After its relocation closer to the city, the village of Monastyrka and the Archimandrite’s small settlement existed here. The researchers also proposed this estuary promontory as the location of a burial ground excavated near the Archbishop’s small settlement in the late 19th century. The 2023 research did not yield any evidence to support this assumption. It has been established that this burial ground was located in a completely different location, on the left bank of the Malaya Kirgizka River, within the modern-day city of Tomsk. The results of this research suggest the need to study the secondary river basins surrounding Tomsk, which hold potential for identifying sites from the initial stage of Russian settlement in the city’s environs and sites of indigenous populations.
