YU.F. KIRYUSHIN AS THE FOUNDER AND LEADER OF THE BARNAUL SCIENTIFIC ARCHAEOLOGICAL SCHOOL
Abstract
Professor Yu.F. Kiryushin exerted a significant influence on the development of higher education in Barnaul in general and archaeological research in particular. His multifaceted work resting on his research experience in Tomsk and the support of the university management resulted in the creation of a competitive team of archaeologists at Altai State University (AltSU), recognized as a scientific school. The author traces the evolution of the scientific and organizational forms of archaeology at Altai State University (laboratory-museum-department) since the late 1970s The article stresses the role of collaboration with the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in further intensifying archaeological research at AltSU. The author characterizes Yu.F. Kiryushin’s professional qualities as a leader of the scientific school and his style of interaction with students and colleagues. The article presents unpublished archival materials that shed light on certain aspects of the development of the Barnaul scientific archaeological school.
