«CHURCH ARCHEOLOGY» AS A DIRECTION OF RESEARCH
Abstract
In our opinion, “church archaeology” is one of the thematic areas of “historical archaeology” that deals with religious and funeral structures. These conclusions were made on the basis of studies of the cultural layer of the Nikolaev monastery in the city of Verkhoturye and the search for the remains of the Basilisk of Siberia and Konstantin Merkushinsky, recognized by the Russian Orthodox Church as saints. In the methods of searching, excavating and reconstructing archaeological monuments of the written epoch there are significant differences from the traditional research procedures of “prehistoric archaeology”. First of all, it is the synthesis of data from written and archaeological sources. The main working material of prehistoric eras - ornamented ceramics - is often absent. There is no need to isolate archaeological cultures, determine the ethnic and cultural identity of the creators of the monuments. The names of the builders and the period of existence of objects with high accuracy for archeology can be obtained from written sources. Research at the intersection of history and archaeology also implies work on a unified periodization of the sciences and the substantiation of the late chronological borders of archeology.
