ENGRAVED DRAWINGS ON DISCOID METAL OBJECTS OF THE MIDDLE AGES IN THE LIGHT OF THE OB-UGRIK AND INDO-IRANIAN PARALLELS (ON THE MATERIALS OF THE URAL-SIBERIAN REGION)
Abstract
In the article the main attention is paid to the image of the central warlike personage, engraved on the medieval “eastern” silver platters accompanied by the mythical bird. Ibe author concludes that the engravings could represent the images of Tahyt-Kotl-Torum, which finds the biggest similarity with the ancient Indian Trita Aptia and the ancient Iranian Traytaona Atvia. Considered material shows not a single similarity, but a whole series of similarities between them. This chain of similarities suggests that Tahyt-Kotl-Torum could well be ancient Ugric God of War and Victory. It is suggested that the origins of this images had sufficiently deep roots in the Indo-European past. The arrow-shaped bird, engraved on the medieval silver platters, near the Central warlike figure, can be compared with Avesta bird-arrow Varagn. In “Avesta” Varagn bird performed as another form of embodiment of Xvarno (Farr, Farn), and as one of the incarnations of God of War and Victory Vertragna. Thus, the mythical bird-arrow and warlike figure, which are depicted on the medieval “oriental” silver platters, should, apparently, be considered in a certain relationship, as single image.
