Аннотация

This study provides a contemporary assessment of metazooplankton community structure in the strategically important cascade reservoirs of the Kura River, Azerbaijan, addressing a multi-decadal research hiatus. Systematic sampling of the Varvara (2019–2021), Mingachevir (2021–2023), and Yenikend (2024–2025) reservoirs was conducted to analyze species composition, zoogeographic affinities, and inter-reservoir faunistic similarity. Analysis revealed a total of 59 species, comprising 27 Rotifera, 18 Cladocera, and 14 Copepoda. A core community of 20 ubiquitous species was common to all three reservoirs. Pairwise comparisons using the Sorensen similarity index demonstrated the highest faunistic similarity between the Mingachevir and Yenikend reservoirs,  particularly among copepods (80.1%). The results establish a crucial baseline for zooplankton biodiversity in this key South Caucasus watershed, revealing patterns shaped by both shared riverine origin and reservoir-specific ecological conditions. These findings are essential for future biomonitoring and informed management of the cascade system.
