FEMALE BURIAL OF THE SCYTHIAN-SAKA TIME WITH A HEADDRESS FROM THE MAIMA-IV BURIAL GROUND IN ALTAI
Abstract
The article examines and analyzes the remains of a composite female headdress discovered in 1987 at the burial ground of the northern variant of the Pazyryk culture of Maima-IV in kurgan No 13, dated to the 3rd century BC. The headdress was made of felt and, apparently, was the whole piece of a hairstyle and a wig. Its basis was an internal frame of a combination of iron rods and studs. On its frontal part was a massive bronze gilded triquester plaque depicting the three heads griffin sheep. A pommel covered with gold fluted foil is fixed on a long hairpin. The headdress from Maima-IV was a type of traditional and widespread female funeral decoration of the Pazyryk culture. The closest analogies come from mound 1 could. Ak-Alaha-3 and mound 15 could. Khankarinsky dol. A clay jug, a stone altar-censer, an iron knife was also found in the burial.
