Specialist in the history of the ancient East. Research interests include the historical geography of South Asia, pre-Islamic Arabia, and East Africa; comparative Indo-European linguistics; the history of caravan and maritime trade; Eastern (Indian and Arabian) motifs in classical mythology; the historical geography of the classical world; and the history of Oriental studies.

Author of approximately 500 scientific publications. Editor-in-chief of the almanac "Scripta antiqua: Issues of Ancient History, Philology, Art, and Material Culture." In 2017, was awarded the Guillaume Budé Gold Medal by the Collège de France.
