She has made significant scholarly contributions, notably in developing the concept of systemic activities of East Asian "people of culture" from China, Korea, and Japan, which is grounded in their mastery of literary culture and traditional arts. Through the analysis and reconstruction of the region's rich game, religious, and spiritual traditions based on ancient and medieval texts, she has created methodologies for investigating diverse cultural phenomena, performing arts, religious rituals, as well as olfactory and wellness practices. A key achievement is her pioneering development of the concept of the "olfactory space" in East Asia. This framework examines fragrance culture through multiple dimensions—including religious-magical, divinatory, healing, and artistic practices, alongside social mechanisms, and trade-economic and military interactions—and involves the integrated study of written sources with archaeological, epigraphic, and ethnographic materials.
