Abstract

The research is devoted to the analysis of sources for the study of state and confessional policy on the Siberian frontier of the Russian Empire at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries.


The chronological framework of the work includes the period of existence of the Steppe Governor-General (1882-1917) as an administrative structure.


The source base of the research was made up of archival storage materials from the fund of the Office of the Steppe Governor-General of the Central State Archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan.


The research methodology includes a historical and genetic approach in combination with methods of content analysis, synthesis, generalization.


The purpose of the article is to identify both the main trends in the activities of the Steppe Governor-General as a conductor of Russian state policy, and the "accompanying" ones caused by ethno-confessional problems and aspects of historical geography.


The historical intentions of a century and a half ago, significant for the modern interstate, international and interfaith dialogue, have been established. The conclusion is made about the importance of the mediator-mediator function, in the role of which the leaders of the Steppe Governor-General acted.
