Baipakov Karl Moldahmetovich — an outstanding scientist and organizer of science of Kazakhstan

Abstract

The article is devoted to a brief coverage of the activities of the outstanding scientist with a world name and organizer of science in Kazakhstan Karl Moldakhmetovich Baipakov, who died suddenly in 2018. The publication reflects the main stages of his scientific biography. His formation as a professional archaeologist and influence on his scientific worldview of V. M. Masson and K. A. Akishev are noted. A brief description of the main expeditions, in which K. M. Baipakov took part or led, is given. The most significant archaeological objects which were studied by him are specified, especially those which were connected with processes of urbanization of Kazakhstan in an era of the middle ages. Highlights the milestones of his administrative activities, especially after he headed the Institute of archaeology of the Academy of sciences of Kazakhstan established in 1991. The article also provides the main directions of international cooperation of the scientist, a list of Kazakhstan and foreign awards, membership in various scientific societies. Special attention is paid to the basic scientific concepts and the results of scientific research of the scientist. In this regard, the preparation of a serial edition of the Code of archaeological monuments of Kazakhstan is of particular importance. No less important is the four-volume fundamental work of K. M. Baipakov, devoted to the history of urbanization of Kazakhstan from the bronze age to the modern time, for which the scientist was awarded the State prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
