On the Research of the Politician’s Linguistic Profile Today
Abstract
The article discusses Russian and international approaches to studying the politician’s linguistic profile. It is assumed that Russian scholars tend to regard political communication in terms of numerous linguistic nuances that have little bearing on its actors and their actions, while foreign researchers strongly associate the politician’s rhetoric with all implications of the politician’s involvement in a situation, be it local orglobal, and conduct their studies multidisciplinary. The article also provides insights into research tools which help to provide a more precise analysis of the politician’s linguistic style, follow its changes and transformations and study its potential. An example in question is the content-analysis program Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count. Its designers have been able to prove the equal importance of notional and functional words. Their sum total provides researchers with an opportunity to verify the ideas about this or that way of speaking of a particular politician. Thus, pragmalinguistic researchers today may employ new techniques to study the politician’s style and to achieve sound results of their work.
