Metaphors by which Eric Bern’s Theories Lived (Based on the books by E. Bern "Games People Play" and "What Do You Say after You Say “Hello?”")

Abstract

The article is devoted to linguostylistic analysis of scientific works by the American psychologist Eric Berne Games People Play and What Do You Say after You Say“Hello?” in the framework of the conceptual metaphor theory, developed by J. Lakoff and M. Johnson. Those scientists classified metaphors, treated them as a cognitive tool and introduced them into the applied science, i.e. interaction of a person with the surrounding world. The scholars point out the interaction of cognitive structures, linking two conceptual domains in the course of metaphorization – the source sphere and the target sphere. The orientation metaphors that most often occur in E. Berne’s works are: a parent – an adult – a child, a man – a woman, and a man – society, based on a stimulus-response model. The authors also make a review of the modern cognitive studies which differentiate the types of metaphors and their applied character, describe types of metaphors which are used in the scientific works by E. Berne, and define their main function – «objectification» of abstract concepts.
